3D Product Animation of the Workout 180 Home Gym

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

This 3D product animation sold an innovative piece of exercise equipment called the Workout 180 that
incorporates strength training, stability exercises and cardio workouts into one compact and portable
fitness device.

The animation challenges were first of all, to show the product’s inner workings, which were not obvious at all from the outside. Animating the product in 3D allowed consumers a glimpse inside the cowling of this amazing invention, so they could see the complex array of bands and how they functioned. The Workout 180’s unique resistance band system “pre-stretched” the bands inside the unit, providing 7 different levels of resistance.

The second marketing challenge for this product was how to VISUALLY express the different tension intensity characteristics of the Workout 180, and how they were superior to conventional band exercise gear. The animated diagram behind the product in some of the animated sequences demonstrated this simply and effectively.

The decision to animate this product was made by creative director Kim Cheetham at ad agency Distilled Creative. Toronto animation studio Mike Efford Motion Design created the computer animation.

SOLE Ellipticals

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

SOLE Elliptical machines: The science behind the machines.

There is a lot of hoopla in the fitness equipment industry concerning Elliptical Trainers and which one has the best Biomechanics and Ergonomics. You’ll also hear terms like “Plantar flexion” and “Erector spinae rotation” and “Ulnar deviation”. We at Sole feel you shouldn’t have to have a degree in orthopedics to buy an Elliptical Trainer but you should understand the words Biomechanics and Ergonomics. Here are the official definitions:

Biomechanics: The study of the anatomical principles of movement.

Ergonomics: (from Greek ergon work and nomoi natural laws) The study of optimizing the interface between human beings, and the designed objects and environments they interact with.

Simply stated Biomechanics is the study of how your body moves and Ergonomics is the study of how to build a machine that moves like your body does so you feel comfortable using the machine. For an Elliptical Trainer this means it should have a smooth, continuous foot motion, an Ellipse pattern (The pattern that your foot travels during exercise) that is level and simulates walking or running.

Do home gyms have bench press?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

I am thinking about purchasing a home gym such as the body solid exm 2500s or the weider 9635 and they both say they have a bench press feature. I don’t really know too much about home gym but in the pictures I dont see a barbell or anything to bench press. Does it like use the pulley system in a way similar to the bench press or does it mean you have to purchase a barbell and weights to use it or what?

It most probably comes with the barbell rest but you may need to buy the bar and the weights separately. When you purchase it, its a good idea to double check with the supplier.
