Need recommendations for fitness equipment: yoga, pilates, stretching?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

I want to install a small home gym in a 9.5 x 11.5 room (8′ ceiling) on my second floor. The purpose of this is two-fold: I need to lose weight, and I need to regain strength and flexibility.

I was thinking of installing a ballet bar or parallel bars and buying a new or used Total Gym (for pilates).

What do you all think? Anyone have experience with Total Gym? Any recommendations on an alternative piece of equipment?

I recently bought a home gym. It is made by PowerTech and called the ‘workbench’. It is great!! It took a while to setup…the directions weren’t great but the machine is!! I bought it at Dick’s Sporting Goods. 8ft by 11ft. It was $1000 without the weights…so I guess it depends on how serious you are and how much you have to spend.

It would be a lot of money to spend if a month or two from now you aren’t using it much.

Is there a site that shows all the different workouts you can do on a at home gym?

What CHEAP fitness equipment do you recommend?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

I asked this question 2 days ago and got "answers" that didn’t truly answer my question.

I am looking to convert our garage into a "home gym". I have some home fitness tools like resistance bands, fitness dvds(my husband has a tv out there to watch football) and yoga mat. What inexpensive gear/tools should I add?

I have a bike I ride around to do my errands so please don’t tell me to get a stationary bike or a treadmill. I’d like real recommendations that wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg. A home gym is to save us money verses a health club membership.

My husband has a weight bench and free weights out there. I do know how to use them. As far as my goals- I’m looking to mix things up from my cycling/power walking routine.

I would start by looking on a site like craigslist.com. I think a lot of people buy equipment with a goal in mind and then give up so you could probably get some used equipment in really good shape at a cheap price.

As far as what you need to buy….. i guess it depends on your fitness goals. Do you want to bulk up, tone, strenghten? But you probably want a good mix of some cardio and weights.

Grip Training for Weightlifting at Home

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

If when working out your hands give up holding the dumbbells before you finished training the muscle you targeted, you need to do something about your grip.

Here is how to train your grip strength and endurance at home without having to buy “squeezers” or any other fitness gadgets. All you need beside your regular workout equipment is just a towel and a couple of rubber bands.

What is the best in-home gym equipment (machine) to get rid fat and loose skin around the stomach and thighs?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

I lost heaps of weight a while ago, and now have heaps of loose skin around my stomach and thighs, and a bit on my arms. I have also recently put on a bit more weight in those areas and want to burn it off fast and tone up my body a bit. I DO NOT want to go to a gym, but instead want to do it in the comfort of my home. I am willing to buy any machines or fitness equipment I will need to do this (within reason).

PLEASE HELP!!! I need my confidence back for summer and a new me!
thanks heaps!

Ahh! you just named all my old problem areas! I do have the perfect piece of workout equipment for stomach, thighs, and butt though. It’s called "Leg Magic!" I’ve had mine for 2 years and LOVE it! (The website is below.) I don’t know what the most your willing to spend is but this machine is very small and it’s only $200.00! They even have an offer where you can try it for a month for like $20.00!

For arms, get a 5 pound weight and hold it in one hand. Bring the arm with weight straight above your head. Have your other arm come around behind your head and let your hand grab right underneath your elbow. This gives your arm with the weight support. Bend arm with weight at elbow and then straighten it again. I do 20 presses slowly and then switch to other arm (having one arm still supporting the arm with the weight.) Then I go back to first arm and do 20 fast presses and then switch again. I do the routine twice so its: both arms slow, both arms fast, both arms slow, both arms fast.

Good luck! PLEASE try the Leg Magic. It’s not a joke, believe me!

What do you think of advertisements for fitness equipment featuring women?

Monday, March 1st, 2010

I’m sure you’ve seen them. A treadmill, a stair climber, whatever. And there’s a woman in spandex with her hair in a ponytail but with flawless make-up and not sweating at all.

Using sex to sell? Some of this equipment is bought more by women than men and while I’d like to imagine they’re catering to lesbians and bisexual women, I doubt it. And a lot of men find a woman perspiring to be sexy anyway, judging by a lot of pr0n.

Isn’t the whole point of these products to make you sweat? If you’re not sweating, you aren’t in your target heart rate.

It’s home equipment, so why are they dolled up? Isn’t a selling point that you can wear grungy sweats because you don’t have to go to the fitness center? And wait til your shower to fix your hair?

My suspicion: they want to have women associate the use of the product with the promised result – slim, fit, confident (and confident means not sweating in most situations) even if the actual use of the product is much less "glamorous".

Maybe there’s a bit of our "instant gratification" mindset in going for such ads.

And maybe I am reading this all wrong.

What do you think?

Same reason why advertisements don’t show a woman shaving her hairy legs when they are trying to sell razors or shaving cream. It’s always a woman shaving her already hairless legs. Or the same reason why models in spanx ads have fit bodies and don’t need body shaping hosiery for "support". Showing reality doesn’t always sell products. (Infomercials and "before and after" advertisements can be an exception, but normally people don’t want to be presented with realism when they are being targeted for advertising.) I don’t think many people want to see a sweaty fat man with armpit stains when they are buying exercise machines.

What is the cheapest leg press on the market? Or where can you get inexpensive fitness equipment?

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

I would really like to use a Leg Press, but do not want to join a gym. I am really busy at work and I like to do my exercises at home in my own time.

I would ideally like to buy a Leg Press and one that is not vertical, but one with a plate. But most seem to be £600 to £1,000 and I cannot afford that.

Any one know where I could get a leg press cheaper please?

ebay is the most obvious place to look, also though, if ur near any local auctions. I noticed argos has a couple of goodens. If ur lucky enough to be near a gym, school thats closing down its gymnasium. a friend of mine kitted his whole garage out for less that 400 pounds, and there was thousands of pounds worth of equipment, dont expect it to be a shiny and new though, it will be heavily used, but it still works.
