Look at the Power Block dumbbells. I love em! They don’t take up much space, adjustable to a wide range of weights. Dumbbells are great for upper body workouts, but leg workouts are limited.

That is a great question…. and the answer is dumbells. Perhaps the adjustable kind where you have one set and they "dial" in. You can do more exercises with dumbells than any equipment. Purchased individually, for instance for me to start, I’d go with 15, 25, and 40’s. This would give me a good range for the different exercises.
1. Dumbells are better than machines because they force you to balance the weight thereby engaging more muscles and developing a more "real world" kind of strength.
2. They can be taken outside for additional training types. For instance, I use them in the field by my house to do heaving and throwing exercises or lunges.
3. They are compact and easy to store taking up far less room than a machine and require NO MAINTENANCE! They’ll last forever!
4. You can do many more exercises than any piece of equipment will allow you to do.
5. They will cost you FAR LESS! References : Personal training is a passion.
Dumbbells are great, for upper body. I’m sure you want to do more than work on your arms, chest and back…. I am a big fan of the Body Solid multigyms, they allow you to work your whole body. Legs often get neglected in workouts because we are more interested in having ‘guns’ than anything else. But you can build muscle throughout your body not just the top half. Try the BSG10X for a good piece of home gym equipment. References : http://www.bestmultigyms.com/index.php?cPath=5
A squat box with an adjustable bench and associated weights. With that in your house, you can train virtually every major muscle in your body.
It will be reasonably priced compared to universal and bowflex. It won’t required advanced engineering to put together. It won’t break down or fall apart. And you can really work hard on it. References :
