Best Home Gym Equipment for Weight Training?

I am looking to start weight training and trying to decide whether it’s more cost effective to buy my own equipment or join a gym.

My question is….. if I decide to buy my own equipment what equipment is essential? I’ve been looking at olympic type barbell and dumbbells. A good solid bench with a squat stand. Anything else I need? I dont need any cardio equipment as I have the road outside and a good bike.

Thanks

A home gym is obviously more cost effective if you intend to be working out for a long time or have other people who would use the weights as well, like family, friends, etc.

If you want a home gym, you should stick with free weights unless you’ve got the money to fork out for a machine or two. Free weights are generally considered the best however, as machines are mostly for beginners. You’ll definitely need a bench press set complete with barbell and plates…probably another barbell or two (you might consider getting two – a regular one and a cured one), a variety of 45lb, 25lb, 10lb, and 5lb plates (1lb plates if you’re fussy). Get adjustable dumbbells that work with 10lb and 5lb plates as well so you can adjust the weight on them for different purposes. With this, you can do pretty much every well-known exercise: bench pressing, bicep curls, dips, power cleans, squats, lunges, etc. You’re only really missing a pull-up bar, which really depends on how much stress your door frames can take (you have to attach them to the top of a door and if the wood’s rotten…). Then again you could always do bent-over rows instead of pull-ups.

I would say get four of each plate except for the 10lb and 5lb ones; get 6 of those. 2~4 more of each if you intend to have a workout buddy.

Honestly, with the equipment you mentioned, you’ll be able to exercise whatever muscle group you want in one way or another. That’s all you really need; in my opinion, free weights are better than machines at the gym anyway. Just make sure the bench is adjustable for whatever exercises you’d want to do.

yeh mate all u need is the dumbells and barbelll, might be sensibe to get dumbells which have adjustable weight otherwise u may just get too strong for them and then u would have to buy new dumbells. a bvench is great so u can do bench press which is olne of the best strenght traiining excersices around.

if u really wanted to go for it u could get a multigym as that is great for working all muscles but they are expensive for a good one.

Squat/power rack (or a homemade variant)
    Pull up/chin up bar
